About PJMA

Welcome to the Port Jefferson Music Academy. Founded in the fall of 1998, the Port Jefferson Music Academy offers a unique opportunity to study music in an inspiring, non-competitive educational environment. At the Port Jefferson Music Academy, students explore their musical potential in a supportive and creative atmosphere. The Academy embraces a philosophy of communal inclusiveness, by welcoming all those who wish to enrich their lives through exposure to music. Students range from young beginners to college undergraduates majoring in music. Classes for adult amateurs are available.

Among our teachers are faculty members of such renowned institutions as Juilliard Pre-college, Mannes College of Music, Queens College-Aaron Copland Conservatory of Music, and the School for Strings in New York City. Port Jefferson Music Academy students have gone on to study at the Juilliard Pre-College and the Mannes College of Music Preparatory Division. Graduates of the Academy have been accepted into such prestigious music colleges as Queen’s College-Aaron Copland Conservatory of Music, Indiana University, Oberlin Conservatory, Peabody Conservatory, and Northwestern University. Our faculty lead successful careers in teaching, performance and composition.

The Academy offers private lessons in violin, viola, cello, piano, guitar, wind instruments and voice. A wide variety of courses includes chamber music, instrumental ensembles, composition, music theory and music appreciation. Regular workshops, recitals and concerts provide students with an opportunity to perform frequently, as well as to share their learning experience with peers. In addition the Academy offers Kindermusik classes and a prestigious Suzuki program for younger students. The Academy is a registered member of Kindermusik International and of the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Our Suzuki faculty have completed their teacher training at the School for Strings in Manhattan.

In collaboration with the Greater Port Jefferson and Brookhaven Arts Council, the Academy presents Academy Concerts, an educational chamber music concert series. These concerts have been an important source of inspriration for students at the Academy over the years, and play an important role in the curriculum.

The Port Jefferson Music Academy is offering an array of new creativity classes for all ages in addition to our established music program, including several visual arts classes.  Our purpose is to help young people in our community to develop a sense of cultural awareness and artistic expression as well as to stimulate intellectual curiosity.  Our summer 2012 class schedule can be viewed by clicking on the "Programs" button.

The Academy is centrally located in downtown Port Jefferson on Long Island's North Shore in Suffolk County. Please see "Contact Us" for exact directions.

We hope that you will join the rapidly growing number of students who benefit from working with our distinguished faculty in a supportive and creative atmosphere,

Sincerely,
Sophie Arbuckle,
